Aztaka is a beautiful side-scrolling RPG, where you are heading towards the gods. You are Huitzilo, son of the forgotten ancient gods. After living with Xipe Totec, he tells you to begin your journey to the Path of the Gods.

At the beginning, you will be able to just use your spear. The spear is your only attacking weapon. The great thing about the spear is its reach. You can get a few hits in from a good enough distance so that you're not extremely close to the enemy.

The downside to the spear, though, is that the only attack it can do is just the straight jab for a normal attack. To make up for this, there are many skills that you can learn to make your spear a deadly weapon.

My favorite skill for the spear is the down attack. When you jump, push down at any point and you will propel downwards, your spear pointed downwards. It will only hurt the enemy for half of your attack, but you bounce off them and you can keep hitting them.

Early on, you will also learn how to use the power of the gods to manipulate certain objects or heal others. The first energy you will obtain to do this is vital essence. Vital essence is green in color, and once you obtain a certain skill, you will be able to regenerate your health with it. There are four energies in all.

Once you head back to Xipe Totec, you will receive a hummingbird, called Ayohpa, who wasn’t a hummingbird before. I believe she is a human, but Xipe tells you that you both have ancestral powers. Later in the game, you will be able to lift her curse.

Ayohpa uses spells and doesn’t have any health, which is great. But her spells can cost a huge sum of her Divine Energy. At one point, she will be able to heal using your second energy--divine energy. My favorite spell would have to be the Tropical Gale. She goes from one side of the screen to the other with a very powerful wind that rips through enemies like nothing.

Throughout your adventure, you will find many enemies that you will have to face. Most of them are on the ground and can attack from a distance. Others are flying and either ram into you or attack you with their own weapon.

Out of all the enemies you fight, none will compare to the boss fights. These are some of the best boss fights in a side scroller that I have played. They are all beautifully thought of and have their own intense attacks, as well.

Enemies, bosses, merchants, and quest givers can give you equipment for both you and Ayohpa. You can equip accessories like earrings and armguards. Ayohpa can equip rings. You will also come upon some equipment that will be automatically equipped, and it will be a lot stronger than what you previously had.

All of the loot and gold you obtain has to go someplace, and that is where your packs come in handy. The pack for your equipment goes into the coffer. The potions go into the leather sack. Your gold goes into a satchel. What I like about the satchel is that it can hold only a certain amount of gold. Some may think that that isn’t a good thing, but it doesn’t let you gain money at a humongous rate, because you will get lots of equipment to sell and money from all of your foes later.

Both you and Ayohpa have certain stats. Since you are the one with shield and spear, you have strength, agility, and endurance. Every point in strength increases your attack by one. Agility increases the chance of criticals. Endurance is the amount of vital energy you have, or health.

You also have defense and divine influence. Defense is only affected by your equipment, and it reduces the damage that you take. A high defense can be a huge life saver, because if you don’t have much health, you can be eaten away. Divine influence is also only affected by equipment, but the more influence means that better equipment will be found. I believe divine influence also affects the drop rate of items.

Ayohpa, because she uses spells, has intelligence, spirituality, and faith. Intelligence increases willpower by one point each. Willpower increases damage done with spells. Spirituality increases the critical hit chance with spells. Faith increases her divine energy or mana.

She also has concentration and curse level. Concentration is affected only by the mental health, which I believe is the amount of divine energy she has. Curse level is the percentage of how close she is to being cured and becoming her normal self again. Curse level is affected by exorcisms.

Aztaka is a grand side scroller that any RPG fan would love. With an interesting casting system and beautiful backgrounds, I give Aztaka a 95.
