Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide is set to recapture the magic that captivated fans who played the original. Seeing the expansion pack in action at E3 was one of the highlights of the show. The people at the BioWare booth were very eager in demonstrating some of the impressive features coming in the expansion pack being co-developed by FloodGate Entertainment and BioWare. Shadows of Undrentide will feature a 20+ hour campaign, 5 new prestige classes, 16 new creatures, over 50 new spells, 3 new tilesets and much more. What fascinated me about the original was the detail put into the story as well as the quests. The environments were always exciting and there were usually unique quests that you needed to solve in each area. It was not just about blazing through the environments and killing everything in sight that mattered, but analyzing the area and finding the right solution to a particular quest.

The expansion pack is just as impressive and you will find many unique touches have been added to the game. There will be altars that you can pray to in the game and benefits or consequences resulting from your actions. If you pray to an altar, you may be rewarded by increased stats while insulting it may result in lowered stats. Depending on your character class you may also be able to gain valuable information by reading tracks on the ground that have been left by others. By reading these tracks you may find clues to help you on a particular quest. The quests are just as exciting as in the original campaign. In one area, a huge head-shaped boulder seems to block your path. How can you proceed? Well, you may be able to do this by enlisting the help of Kobolds.

There is another area that is filled with dangerous and deadly creatures that are far too difficult to tackle on your own. How can you possibly survive? In this instance the answer may come from some bull-like creatures that are found in an enclosed area nearby. By releasing the door to their corral you will allow these creatures to stampede through these enemies, effectively and efficiently killing them and clearing the path ahead. As you proceed you are able to see the dead bodies of the creatures that once posed a threat to you. In another area, you must bring down a mighty and powerful dragon. What might help is a special potion that turns you into a frost giant, a creature capable of bringing down the mighty and fierce dragon. These are the kinds of special details that I appreciated about the original campaign and what I find so engaging to see again within this expansion pack.
